(Redirected from Button (control))

Buttons on a handheld calculator.

Generic arcade game buttons.

A push-button (also spelled pushbutton) or simply "button is a simple switch mechanism for controlling some aspect of a machine or a process. Buttons are typically made out of hard material, usually plastic or metal. The surface is usually flat or shaped to accommodate the human finger or hand, so as to be easily depressed or pushed. Buttons are most often biased switches, though even many un-biased buttons (due to their physical nature) require a spring to return to their un-pushed state. Different people use different terms for the "pushing" of the button, such as press, depress, mash, and punch.

Uses
In industrial and commercial applications[disambiguation needed] push buttons can be linked together by a mechanical linkage so that the act of pushing one button causes the other button to be released. In this way, a stop button can "force" a start button to be released. This method of linkage is used in simple manual operations in which the machine or process have no electrical circuits for control.
Pushbuttons are often color-coded to associate them with their function so that the operator will not push the wrong button in error. Commonly used colors are red for stopping the machine or process and green for starting the machine or process.
Red pushbuttons can also have large heads (called mushroom heads) to for easy operation and to facilitate the stopping of a machine. These pushbuttons are called emergency stop buttons and are mandated by the electrical code in many jurisdictions for increased safety. This large mushroom shape can also be found in buttons for use with operators who need to wear gloves for their work and could not actuate a regular flush-mounted push button. As an aid for operators and users in industrial or commercial applications, a pilot light is commonly added to draw the attention of the user and to provide feedback if the button is pushed. Typically this light is included into the center of the pushbutton and a lens replaces the pushbutton hard center disk. The source of the energy to illuminate the light is not directly tied to the contacts on the back of the pushbutton but to the action the pushbutton controls. In this way a start button when pushed will cause the process or machine operation to be started and a secondary contact designed into the operation or process will close to turn on the pilot light and signify the action of pushing the button caused the resultant process or action to start.
In popular culture, the phrase "the button" (sometimes capitalized) refers to a (usually fictional) button that a military or government leader could press to launch nuclear weapons.
History
Buttons as control devices were unknown until the early 20th Century, with the possible exception of valves on wind instruments. Where small controls were needed, for example on camera shutters, they were usually styled after latches or triggers. Early teleprinters had keyboards similar to keyboard instruments with white and black keys.
The earliest examples of buttons as currently understood were probably mechanical typewriter keys in the early 20th Century, followed by electromechanical devices such as teleprinters and teletypes. These became more closely associated with electrical switching when used as a component of devices such as the Enigma Machine, and became commonplace in around the 1960s.

Early life
Casagrande was born to a well-off Finnish-Italian Catholic family.[1] He was raised in Ylitornio in the Finnish Lapland before moving to Helsinki to study architecture.
Mercenary and Writer
After his service in the Finnish Army, in 1993 Casagrande volunteered for the Bosnian Croat Defence Forces HVO. He wrote under name Luca Moconesi a controversial book Mostarin tien liftarit / Hitchhikers on the Road to Mostar (WSOY 1997)[2] about his experiences in the Bosnian Civil War. Based on descriptions of war crimes committed by the main character in the autobiographical book, he came under suspicion as a possible war criminal. As a defence, he later stated that the book was in fact a work of fiction.[3]

Sixty Minute Man, 2000

Treasure Hill, 2003
After being a finalist in the UK journal Architectural Review's Emerging Architecture competition (1999) [23][4] Marco Casagrande and his then partner Sami Rintala were invited to the Venice Biennial 2000. The New York Times reporter chose their project "60 Minute Man" as his personal favorite in the Biennale[24]. [5]In the project Casagrande & Rintala had planted on oak forest in an abandoned barge on top of 60 minutes worth of composted human waste produced by the city of Venice. Casagrande cross-over architectural work encompasses the realms of architecture, urban and environmental planning, environmental art, circuses and other artistic disciplines.[6]In search for subconscious architecture, real reality and connection between the modern man and nature. He believes that one shall not be blindfolded by stress, the surroundings of economics, the online access to entertainment or information. What is real is valuable.[7]
Casagrande was nominated as the professor of ecological urban planning in the Taiwan based Tamkang University after the Treasure Hill project, in which Casagrande changed an illegal settlement of urban farmers into an experimental laboratory of environmental urbanism. [8] The overhaul had mixed reactions from the community. [25]
His theory of the Third Generation City views the post industrial urban condition as a machine ruined by human nature and architects as design shamans merely interpreting what the bigger nature of the shared mind is transmitting.[9]

Fingerprint Ghost is a locked room mystery short story by Joseph Commings, featuring his detective Brooks U. Banner.
Plot summary
Senator Brooks U. Banner is making a phone call out side the Sphynx club, when he hears angry yelling a few booths down. Magician Larry Drollen is arguing with someone, telling them he has no more need for them. Seeing Banner is looking at him, Drollen turns, and simply says "Murder". Drollen then tells him the story of Gabriel Garrett, a doctor who was stabbed with a silver handled knife that had no finger prints on it. Garrets wife Ivy, and his aunt Letitia Cody want the case to be resolved, and hire fake medium Ted Wesley to perform a seance. Wesley claims for a fee, he can bring back Garrett's spirit, and have him point out the murderer. During the seance, the table rattles, there are strange voices, but nothing comes out of it. Larry Drollen tells Wesley he can produce something better, and if he can, Wesley has to give Ive and Letitia their money back. The seance is at 11, and the District Attorney Arcibald Lang, will be attending.
Everybody is at Ted Wesley's parlor at 11. Drollen is tied into a large walnut chair, that is attached to a cabinet, in front of a circle of 4 chairs. The silver knife is held by Drollen briefly, and then put in the cabinet. Wesley's servant Shannon brings in straitjackets, and straps everyone in. He then locks them all in. Drollen tells every one to be quiet, but after a while, the others wonder what is going on. Asking Drollen, he doesn't respond. Upon the door opening, it can be seen Drollen has been stabbed, and every one is in a straitjacket. The police are called, and take the knife, looking for fingerprints, they find one. But it belongs to no one in the room.
Banner goes to see Archer the next day, and finds out what happened at the seance. Every one had their feet touching each others, and no one felt any one get up. The fingerprint is worthless, because it does not belong to any one. There is also a palm print, but it is blurred from the knife slipping. Archer reveals that even though Ivy had the body cremated, Garrett's fingerprints did not match, so the killer was not a ghost. All of the people were in straitjackets, and there was no where to hide an animal, meaning, no one could do it.
The police find out that Garrett was killed by a snowbird named Mulik. Mulik was not at the seance, so he is not the killer. Banner then reveals that while Drollen's secretary was going through old news clippings, she found out that Drollen was married to a sideshow freak. Banner, unsure of were this works in, invites Ivy and Wesley to lunch. A redhaired girl snaps Ivy's picture, causing her to go loose jointed, and faint. After she come to, Banner figures out she is pregnant.
The next afternoon, Banner invites into Lang's office, Ivy, Wesley, Lang, and Letitia. Banner then reveals he knows exactly how it happened. In the reversal of John Dickson Carr's The Crooked Hinge, Banner reveals that Ivy killed Drollen, and was able to get out of the straitjacket because she has no arms. Ivy was also wearing loose shoes, so she easily slipped them off. Ivy killed Drollen, because they had been married years ago. But then they driffted apart, and Ivy committed bigamy. Now, Garrett's baby is on the way, so she begged Drollen to take her back. Drollen refused on the phone, so Ivy killed him. The fingerprint on the knife didn't match, because it wasn't a fingerprint, but was a toeprint, from where Ivy held the knife with her feet.
Quotes
Banner: I'll get three birds with one stone. This'll give me a chance to talk to Wesley and at the same time get a squint at the redhead girl in the flesh.
Lang's Deputy: That's only two birds. Where does the third one come in?
Banner: I'm gonna eat that one

Oxygen and MAPP gas cylinders with two-stage pressure regulators
A pressure regulator is a valve that automatically cuts off the flow of a liquid or gas at a certain pressure. Regulators are used to allow high-pressure fluid supply lines or tanks to be reduced to safe and/or usable pressures for various applications.

Operation

Single-stage pressure regulator

Two-stage pressure regulator
Pressure regulator's primary function is to match the flow of gas through the regulator to the demand for gas placed upon the system. If the load flow decreases, then the regulator flow must decrease also. If the load flow increases, then the regulator flow must increase in order to keep the controlled pressure from decreasing due to a shortage of gas in the pressure system.
A regulator includes a loading element, a measuring element, and a restricting element.
Restricting Element: This element is a type of valve arrangement. It can be a globe valve, butterfly valve, poppet valve, or any other type of valve that is capable of operating as a variable restriction to the flow.
Loading Element: This element is what applies the needed force to the restricting element. This can be any number of things such as a weight, a spring, a piston actuator, or more commonly the diaphragm actuator in combination with a spring.
Measuring Element: This element tells us when the inlet flow is equal to the outlet flow. The diaphragm is widely used because not only is it used for measuring but as well for loading purposes.
In the pictured single-stage regulator, a diaphragm is used with a poppet valve to regulate pressure. As pressure in the upper chamber increases, the diaphragm is pushed upward, causing the poppet to reduce flow, bringing the pressure back down. By adjusting the top screw, the downward pressure on the diaphragm can be increased, requiring more pressure in the upper chamber to maintain equilibrium. In this way, the outlet pressure of the regulator is controlled.
Modern gas regulators can vary its operation by the use of stiffer springs, pre-amplification, velocity boosting, and lever ratio.
Applications
Oxy-fuel welding and cutting
Oxy-fuel welding and cutting processes require gases at specific pressures, and regulators will generally be used to reduce the high pressures of storage cylinders to those usable for cutting and welding. Oxy-gas regulators usually have two stages: The first stage of the regulator releases the gas at a constant rate from the cylinder despite the pressure in the cylinder becoming less as the gas in the cylinder is used, as in the first stage of a scuba-diving regulator. The second stage of the regulator controls the pressure reduction from the intermediate pressure to low pressure. It is constant flow. The valve assembly has two pressure gauges, one indicating cylinder pressure, the other indicating hose pressure.
Propane/LP Gas
All propane and LP Gas applications require the use of a regulator. Because pressures in propane tanks can fluctuate significantly, regulators must be present to deliver a steady flow pressure to downstream appliances. These regulators compensate for tank pressures in excess of 200 psig and commonly deliver 11 inches water column for residential applications. Propane regulators differ in size, delivery pressure and adjustability but are uniform in their purpose to deliver a constant outlet pressure for downstream requirements. As is the case in all regulators, inlet pressure is higher than outlet pressure.
Recreational vehicles
For recreational vehicles with plumbing, a pressure regulator is a necessity. When camping, a source of water may have an enormous pressure level, particularly if it comes from a tank that is at a much higher elevation than the campground. Water pressure is dependent on how far the water must fall. Without a pressure regulator, the intense pressure encountered at some campgrounds in mountainous areas may be enough to burst the camper's water pipes or unseat the plumbing joints, causing flooding. Pressure regulators for this purpose are typically sold as small screw-on accessories that fit inline with the hoses used to connect an RV to the water supply, which are almost always screw-thread-compatible with the common garden hose.
Breathable air supply
Main article: Diving regulator
Pressure regulators are used with air tanks used for breathing during SCUBA diving. The tank may contain pressures well in excess of 2000 PSI, which could cause a fatal barotrauma injury to a person breathing it directly. A...(and so on)

Sprite is a transparent, lemon-lime flavored, caffeine free soft drink, produced by the Coca-Cola Company. It was introduced to the United States in 1961. This was Coke's response to the popularity of 7 Up, which had begun as "Lithiated Lemon" in 1929. It comes in a primarily silver, green, and blue can or a green transparent bottle with a primarily green and blue label.

History
Sprite was introduced in the United States in 1961 to compete against 7-Up. In the 1980s, many years after Sprite's introduction, Coke pressured its large bottlers that distributed 7 Up to replace the competitor with the Coca-Cola product. In large part due to the strength of the Coca-Cola system of bottlers, Sprite finally became the market leader position in the lemon-lime soda category in 1978.[citation needed]
Sprite was introduced in Norway in 1998.
Marketing
Over the years, Sprite advertising has used the portmanteau word "lymon," combining the words "lemon" and "lime," to describe the flavor of the drink.
Sprite's slogans in the 60s and 70s ranged from "Taste Its Tingling Tartness," "Naturally Tart," and "It's a Natural!"
A melon ball is referenced in the Freezepop song "secret Bonus Song" that appears at the end of their "Fashion Impression Function" EP. The song is otherwise known as "Sprite" or "Melonball Bounce" and was originally composed by Raymond Scott for a Sprite radio commercial around 1963, that references the "ice-tart taste" of Sprite.
Sprite started its most memorable campaign in the early 1980s with the word "Great Lymon Taste makes it Sprite" which remained on the logo for many years. However, this was never the actual Sprite slogan and was advertised by Jim Varney as Ernest P. Worrell.
By the 1980's Sprite began to have a big following among teenagers, So in 1987 marketing ads for the product were changed to cater to that demographic. "I Like the Sprite in You" was their first long running slogan. Many versions of the jingle were made during that time to fit various genres. The slogan was used until 1994.
In 1994 Sprite created a newer logo that stood out from their previous logos. The main coloring of the product's new logo was blue blending into green with silver "splashes," and subtle small white bubbles were on the background of the logo. The word "Sprite" had a blue backdrop shadow on the logo, and the words "Great Lymon Taste!" were removed from the logo. This was the official U.S. logo until 2006.
During 1994, the slogan was also changed to "Obey Your Thirst" and was set to the urban crowd with a hip-hop theme song. One of the first lyrics for the new slogan were, "Never forget yourself 'cause first things first, grab a cold, cold can, and Obey your thirst."
Toward the late 90s most of Sprite's advertisements featured amateur and famous basketball players. The tagline for most of these ads was, "Image is nothing. Thirst is everything. Obey your thirst."
In 1998, one infamous commercial poked fun at products with cartoon mascots. In the commercial, a mother serves up two glasses of a fictitious product called "Sun Fizz" for her kids. The kids are thrilled, saying that it's their favorite. Then the product's mascot, a sun character with blue eyes, a red bow tie, and a high-pitched Mickey Mouse-like voice, pops out saying that "there's a delicious ray of sunshine in every drop." The mother and her kids scream in horror and run while the sun character chases them around the house asking why they're running from him. After the mom trips and tells her kids to keep running, the viewer is left to wonder what will happen to her. Finally, the commercial's message is given: "Trust your gut, not some cartoon character."[1]
In the 1990s, one of Sprite's longest-running ad campaigns was "Grant Hill Drinks Sprite" (overlapping its "Obey Your Thirst" campaign), in which the well-liked basketball player's abilities, and Sprite's importance in giving him his abilities, were humorously exaggerated.[2][3]
Also in the 1990s, Sprite launched the short-lived but memorable "Jooky" ad campaign. The 30-second television spots poked fun at other soft drinks' perceived lack of authenticity, ridiculous loyalty programs and, in particular, the grandiose, bandwagon-driven style of advertising popular among other soft drink manufacturers, notably Pepsi. The tagline for these spots was "Image is...(and so on)

Cue Ball Cat is a 1950 one-reel animated cartoon and is the 54th Tom and Jerry short directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera and produced by Fred Quimby. It was animated by Kenneth Muse, Irven Spence, Ed Barge and Ray Patterson, with backgrounds by Robert Gentle and music by Scott Bradley.
Plot
Tom, playing pool, wakes Jerry up by shooting a 10-ball into the pocket where he is sleeping, deep inside the pool table. Jerry is smashed between the 10-ball and a 13-ball. Jerry is mad and walks up through the pocket. He sees nothing, but after a few steps back to the pocket, he spots Tom perches behind it. Jerry tries to jump into another corner pocket, but Tom aims a cue ball with so much English that it spins backwards and takes Jerry back to Tom, who has placed a slanting cue stick leading up to his mouth. Jerry is propelled up the stick and blown down by Tom. Tom then sends a stream of balls after Jerry, flattening the mouse. They give chase back toward Tom, and they stack up at Tom's end of the table. Tom shoots all the balls with his cue, but Jerry hangs on. Jerry is chalked and used as a cue tip by Tom for a shot with an 8-ball. Jerry is upended by the 8-ball rolling in circles, and Tom forces the mouse to jump through the wood rack. Tom then sets it on fire, and when Jerry accomplishes this with poise, Tom aims the 8-ball at the opposite end of the table. It bounces back and hits Jerry in the behind, leaving an "8" imprint. An angry Jerry draws back Tom's cue stick and hits Tom with it.
Tom throws an 8-ball at Jerry, but it squeezes on top of Jerry and bounces off the end and slams Tom in the face. Tom throws an 8 and 6 at Jerry, but Jerry bats them back into Tom's eyes. Tom's 10-ball is returned at such speed it burns a hole through Tom's glove. Tom makes one last attempt with a 1-ball. Jerry hits it so hard that he breaks the cue and Tom retreats through the pool hall to catch it. The ball is heavy enough to pull Tom into a drink machine and Tom is spit out as a drink bottle.
Jerry dives into a corner pocket as Tom returns in anger. Tom gropes through the pocket to find Jerry, but instead grabs his own tail. The cat sticks a fire hose down the pocket tunnels, sweeping Jerry up. He takes swings at the stream with a mechanical bridge to hit Jerry, but only catches Jerry on the end of it. Jerry steals it and uses it as a balancing stick on a high wire. Tom throws two cues at the mouse. The first shreds in half when it hits the wire dead center, but the second scrapes Jerry's rear and he shoots the mechanical bridge into Tom's mouth as revenge. Tom gets up with the mechanical bridge in his mouth and says "Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"
Tom shoots a stream of balls at Jerry, which chase him into and out of the various pockets on the table. Eventually, the balls chase Jerry of their own accord, but Tom is in their path and Jerry opens his mouth and causes Tom to swallow all seven balls. Jerry flees into the corner pocket. Tom sticks a cue into the pocket, looking to poke Jerry, but he stabs himself in the rear end with a hatpin attached by Jerry, upon which he is sent screaming manically into the air and coming crashing down into one of the pockets. At this point, Jerry knocks all of the balls into the pockets with one shot, including the 1-ball into Tom's mouth.
